Who we are
"Why would anyone want to do that for a job?"
I've heard this one a few times before. Or the raised eyebrows and slight look of confusion, waiting to see if I'm joking, before offering an "oh, that's must be... interesting."
Five years ago, I wouldn't have known how to respond to someone telling me they'd chosen to become a funeral director either. As Australians, we tend to steer well clear of talking about death — it's one of those things we'd rather not think about until we have to. But after losing one of my best friends and both of my parents in consecutive years, a seed was planted for me: could the whole experience of a funeral, and how we observe it, be better? More meaningful and grounded, less stuffy and (definitely) less expensive? By changing how we deal with death, could it even change the way we live our lives?
My first foray was training as a death doula (Preparing the Way) and from there I trained as a celebrant (Zenith Virago - Ceremony Masterclass). On top of this I've spent the last few years working in the funeral industry learning the ropes from the inside — what works, what doesn't, and how much of what we accept as "just how it's done" is simply tradition for tradition's sake. Along the way I discovered there was another way to do this. That funerals could feel like authentic reflection of the person being farewelled, not a one-size-fits-all ceremony that could be for anyone.
And so Sunset Funeral Care came to be — built on the belief that there's room for something different.
We believe it's the small things that count. That's why we make a contribution to TIACS for every family we support — because a lasting legacy means the good ripples outward long after the goodbye.
